The metric system defines weight through the kilogram, which was historically based on a physical platinum-iridium cylinder kept in France but redefined in 2019 using Planck's constant for permanent stability. One kilogram equals exactly 1000 grams, and one tonne equals exactly 1000 kilograms. The imperial system evolved from medieval trade practices: the pound originated from Roman libra (about 328.8 grams originally, standardized to 453.59237 grams in 1959). The ounce is 1/16th of a pound, and the stone (still used in the UK for body weight) equals 14 pounds or 6.35029 kg. These irregular ratios create real-world friction — a pharmaceutical company exporting medication must ensure dosage labels show both mg and grains (1 grain = 64.79891 mg exactly), while an American athlete competing internationally needs to understand that 165 lbs equals approximately 74.84 kg, not 75 kg.

The stone (14 lbs / 6.35 kg) has been used in Britain since medieval times for trade. It persists informally for body weight even though official medical records use kilograms. One stone equals exactly 14 pounds, so 11 stone 4 pounds means 158 lbs or 71.67 kg. The UK officially adopted metrication in the 1960s but cultural habits keep the stone alive in casual conversation.
For rough estimates, multiply kilograms by 2.2. For example, 70 kg ≈ 70 × 2.2 = 154 lbs (actual: 154.32 lbs). For a slightly more accurate estimate, double the kg value and add 10% of that result: 70 × 2 = 140, plus 14 = 154 lbs. This works well for typical human body weights.
The tool supports down to milligrams (0.001 g). For sub-milligram measurements like micrograms (μg) used in pharmacology, you'd need to enter the value in grams (e.g., 0.0005 g for 500 μg) and convert to your desired unit.
Negative values are accepted and converted correctly. While physical mass is always positive, negative values can represent net weight changes (like fuel consumption reducing aircraft weight) or accounting adjustments in inventory systems.
